Mariota and her partner Angus relocated from London to the Cape in 2004, rolling up their sleeves and immersing themselves in the restoration and environmental revival of the family farm.

The recent Werf restoration was one of many key projects initiated by Mariota. With its productive vegetable garden, the project inspires visitors to grow their own produce. Mariota believes it’s possible to create a shift on a national level if individuals and communities recognise the power of growing food at home or in community spaces.

Her vision for Spier is strongly rooted in environmental, social and community consciousness.
